Football is back and it feels so good! This football season is weird for me personally, as I worked for the Dallas Cowboys for the past 5 seasons. Nick and I have been going to the games since the 2014! My first year there we went to every single Cowboys home game AND every single Baylor home game. That was crazy and I donโ€™t recommend it, but it made for some great memories. This season Iโ€™m looking forward to watching The Boys and not having my salary determined by how they play on the field though ;) Because we are moving to California (read all the details here), we wonโ€™t be able to attend all of the home Baylor games, but we did make it to the first one. It was such a good day! The Bears won, we ate at Taco Z, and we got Katyโ€™s Custard. Read my Waco Travel Guide here.

Itโ€™s funny to look back and 1) see how my style changed, but 2) see how football game attire has changed. Womenโ€™s sportswear has changed for the better. When I went to college in 2009, we really only had mens t-shirts that we could cut and such. Did you know I made game day dresses in school and that is part of the reason I originally started my blog? I would use it as a platform to style and sell my dresses. I made them for a STEAL. I typically charged people $25 + cost of materials, which was usually just some t-shirt and fabric Iโ€™d buy with a 40% Hobby Lobby coupon. (You could find similar and sometimes lesser quality dresses in boutiques for double or TRIPLE my price.) I would spend hours cramped over my sewing machine, to the point where my roommates would call my bedroom a sweat shop!

Anyway, my point is that most girls donโ€™t wear those types of dresses anymoreโ€ฆ I actually noticed this while I was in school and thatโ€™s how I started making custom bow ties. I recognized that the game day dress bubble was about to burst and picked something else to do, so I could still design and sell things. Buuuut thatโ€™s a story for another day. The point is that some time during my freshman year and my senior year, there was a shift in the apparel and cute items in team colors became more popular. This is still the case and let me tell you I am here for it. Itโ€™s good for your closet and your wallet. Hereโ€™s why!

Most of the time, you can find pieces that you would wear in real lifeโ€ฆ to the office, to school, on the weekend, so you get way more wear out of the item than 3-4 months out of the year. Take this top Iโ€™m wearing for example. I have had it for years. At least 5 years Iโ€™d say! It goes with pencil skirts and such for work, I can dress up jeans with it, and so much more. Itโ€™s not a team color of Baylor, but you can usually wear a neutral and pop your teamโ€™s color as a great option for budgeting if your main color is a crazy orange or purple that you typically wouldnโ€™t wear.

Since it is the start of the season, I thought itโ€™d be fun to share a rainbow of items that would work for multiple schools! Iโ€™ll preface this to say that I know styles are different at every school. SEC girls are more likely to wear skirts/dresses/dress up for games. I wore dresses to most of my college games and in Texas it really isnโ€™t fun to do thatโ€ฆ your thighs get sweaty and Iโ€™ll let you fill in the rest of the scenario. When I ran in the Baylor Line (freshmen take the field before the game starts), I would wear my line jersey (bright yellow) and once I got in the stands, I would immediately take it off, so everyone could see how cute my actual outfit was. Hah! These days Iโ€™m more of a cut-offs kind of girl, but I made sure to include dressy and more casual items, so that you can make it work for your lifestyle.

Most tops come in other colors, so if you like one, you might be surprised to see it actually comes in the color you need!

Tips for deciding what to wear to a football game:

  • Weather: What is the weather going to be like? This will affect everything from your hair, to your makeup, and of course what you end up wearing.

  • Atmosphere: Are you tailgating? Are you going to be walking a lot? Are you just going to a bar to watch? Is the stadium open or closed? Keep these things in mind when you decided what to wear. For example, I wouldnโ€™t wear a silk top to an actual game, but I might wear one if there was AC.

  • Feet: Where are you walking? Concrete? Grass? Mud? How much will you be walking? Most of the time, I wear little sandals, as they donโ€™t hurt my feet and I donโ€™t have to do a ton of walking.

  • Bags: What is the bag policy? Most stadiums arenโ€™t accepting anything but clear purses, so make suer you know what they accept, so you donโ€™t have to do the walk of shame all the way back to your car to drop your handbag off. I really like these clear bags, but they are kind of pricey. Here is a more budget friendly option, but truth be told, I just opt to not bring a purse most of the time. To stay hands free, I will bring my Big O keychain and still have my wallet, id, etc!

Soooo yes, this is what I wore to the latest Baylor game! I went with a neutrals look and popped gold in my accessories and sandals. Anddd of course green and gold with my beloved grapefruit Topo Chico. Iโ€™m usually a little more green and gold, but this still felt like a classic Baylor look, that Iโ€™d actually wear even if it wasโ€™t game day. What are your favorite places to shop? Things to wear? I love a big, soft t-shirt, but those are typically just things I wear around the house, not actually out. Riffraff always does a great job with their football tee line, so thatโ€™s a good place to look if that is what you are into.

Hope your team has a good season, and even if they donโ€™t, I hope you got some good food and memories out of them!!

P.S. Donโ€™t forget to wear your sunscreen!!
