Four months after the fact, I’m finally sharing my sister’s bachelorette party from this past spring. She loves games, music, and a fun time, but most of her bridal party (and bach party attendants) either just had a baby or was pregnant. That being said this is not your typical Austin, Texas bachelorette party. If you want a more traditional ATX vibe, check out the bachelorette party I had 6 years ago here.

My sister (Emma) loves a good theme and costume, so I was already thinking of doing a Kacey Musgraves / Space Cowboy / Rhinestone Cowboy theme one night before she requested a Mamma Mia / Disco / 70’s night for the other evening. Because of that we squished the them into a Disco Mamma Mia Space Cowboy Euphoria Kacey Musgraves type of weekend and it was perfect! See a video montage I made of the weekend here.

Keep reading for decoration inspiration, party favors people will actually use, game ideas, itinerary examples, and more!

BACHELORETTE PARTY DETAILS

  • Location: We stayed in Austin, TX at this airbnb. It was perfect. There was plenty of space, basically everyone got their own bed, the pool and backyard were a dream. It was great! Initially my sister wanted to do a destination bachelorette, but with so many people pregnant and or nursing, it just didn’t work out. This was a great way to meet in the middle.

  • Timing: We planned it for the beginning of March, which was kind of risky because it is before spring even officially started, but we didn’t really have a choice because my twins were born the October before and my sister’s wedding date was the end of April. It actually worked out perfectly weather wise, but Texas weather is fickle so we got very lucky. I would probably say May is a little better because you are mostly past rainy season and the heat isn’t as bad. September would also be a good month if you are trying to decide when to go to Austin.

  • Days: The trip was scheduled from a Thursday evening - a Sunday to make the most of the time. We had a smaller group Thursday night, but that made it more intimate; plus, we were able to decorate so everything was ready when everyone else arrived on Friday. Emma and I drove from Dallas to Austin on Thursday morning.

  • Planning: I think we originally had 16 girls coming, but that dwindled as people weren’t able to go due to sickness or work. I think our final number was 12. We spent the bulk of the time enjoying the house and only went out to eat once, so we planned / prepared meals at home. Because of this everyone ended up paying around $10 a meal which is pretty good for a bachelorette party if you ask me! I try to be very fair, so alcohol was calculated differently for those who didn’t drink and nights stayed were calculated on a bit of pro-rate. For example, even if someone only stayed Friday - Sunday, it wasn’t a straight nightly rate. If they arrived any time before 4:00pm on the Friday, they were benefitting from us arriving on Thursday, but not having to pay the full nightly right. Just something to think about if you are in charge of a bachelorette party. Since I’m 30 I have been to my fair share of bachelorette parties and have been annoyed at times when things were evenly split when it wasn’t an even division. This did create a little more work on my end, but I was okay with it. We also subtracted out my sister, so she wasn’t paying for anything that weekend. Benefit of being the bride! We did not include decorations or party favors in the payments, which is something that personally annoys me as well. I, along with the other matron of honor, covered that cost.

AUSTIN BACHELORETTE PARTY DETAILS

Here is a breakdown of our days and how we spent them.

Thursday:

We were able to get early check in around 12:30 pm instead of the regular 4:00 pm which was so nice! My sister had to take a call at 1:00 pm, so the other matron of honor and I went to the store to grab list minute groceries. We brought / prepared quite a few things previously to arrive, but had to pick up some perishable items and some alcohol. When we arrived back at the house, we started getting ready for a surprise picnic at Barr Mansion, a wedding and event venue in Austin. My sister shared a recap video here. After that we headed back at the house and decorated so it would be ready for the next day, then went to bed.

Friday:

This day was pretty chill as it was mainly a pool day as other girls arrived. We had breakfast, talked, and hung out in the backyard. We didn’t have an official lunch, rather had a ton of the bride’s favorite snacky foods. For dinner everyone arrived and we had a taco night. This evening’s theme was disco! We piled into our cars and drove to Austin Roller Rink to roller skate! We didn’t reserve a party room or anything, so we didn’t have to pay a fee other than to rent the roller skate. We were there from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. I mention this because they close at 10:00 pm and re-open at 11:00 pm for adults only skating. If you skate then, you can actually BYOB! Because we arrived before that time, those who were pregnant did not have to pay anything to enter, as they didn’t skate. If we would have gone during adult skating, they would have had to pay regardless of not skating. It would have been fun to BYOB, but we wanted to get back to play games of our own. I’ll share more about the games later, but this evening we played a custom Emma / Mason (her now husband) Jeopardy game with prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

Saturday:

We woke up and had breakfast, then got ready to go to Jester King Brewery. It is an amazing craft brewery, but they also have wine, cider, and non-alcoholic drinks. They have a kitchen, and a wonderful property that really shows off the Texas hill country. This day we dressed up to the Space Cowboy / Kacey Musgraves theme. We arrived right when they opened so we could get there and grab a table without having to pay to reserve one. It was beautiful weather and we could have stayed all day! Instead we opted to get back to the house to relax by the pool and play games. Right before we left we actually ran into Ben Platt which was really cool, as he is one of my sister’s (and my) favorite performers.

Once around the pool, we had my sister read out favorite memories and favorite traits of her that we submitted around the pool which was a hit. That evening we made pizza and had her lingerie shower. The favorite of the evening were these champagne soaked strawberries. I made some pregnant-friendly strawberries too by just using sugar water. We also played our final game which was a recording of her fiancé answering questions and she had to guess his answer. We didn’t really have a theme that night, but we all wore cute pajamas and then made her try on the lingerie, so we could snap polaroid pictures of her to make a DIY boudoir book.

Sunday:

Clean up! Time to go check out of the airbnb and clean up as we do. We all met for brunch at The Grove Wine Bar and Kitchen. It has a beautiful overlook and the food is so yummy. We didn’t have a “theme” this day, but we were all in cute brunch clothes, so to me it kind of felt like a Grecian getaway which went with the Mamma Mia theme and the fact that they were going to Greece on their honeymoon. We took one last group picture, then went on our way. Such a fun weekend!

BARR MANSION

I wanted to chat a little more about our Thursday evening picnic at Barr Mansion because it was one of my sister’s top moments of the weekend. I truly wish everyone had arrived early so they could have experienced it because it was phenomenal. My sister wanted to get married here, but ultimately decided to stay in Dallas for her nuptials. Barr Mansion hosts private picnics on the grounds and our experience was nothing short of amazing. All of their food is farm to table and they are the only wedding venue in the U.S. that emits zero waste. If their property wasn’t amazing enough, their service and food is just as wonderful. If you don’t have an event there or host your own private picnic, they do have occasional public picnics you can buy a ticket to. It is truly a remarkable experience and I couldn’t recommend a visit more.

Follain Dual Detox Mask

PARTY FAVORS

I’ve been to enough bachelorette parties to know what the typical gifts are and if people just throw them away or have already received them, so it was important to me to give good gifts.

The main gift we gave were teeny BKR bottles. They are my favorite water bottles, period! I have them in all the sizes and they are all great, but the teeny ones were perfect as gifts. They are 250 ml, fit in your cup holders, and are kid friendly. Whether you use it to store breast milk, tequila, or coffee creamer it will always be handy. Grab a straw / straw cap and let your littles use it as a sippy cup. We gave the teeny bridesmaids kiss kit set which comes with their amazing water balm. It saved my lips while I was in the hospital after the twins were born.

We also gave a Follain Dual Detox Mask in a travel size. Follain is one of my favorite beauty stores and they also have their own in-house line, of the products being this mask. Practical and definitely something to use both on the trip and other vacations too. The oasis of your own bathtub works too ;)

We packaged them all together in this cute, reusable bag.

I also provided stick on gems for the disco night - I didn’t put them in the bags because they were small and I didn’t want them to get lost. I almost printed out tattoos of Emma’s face (versus Mason’s face lol) because the weekend was about her! I haven’t seen anyone print out the bride’s face instead - it would have been hilarious, but was just one of those things that got dropped in the end. You can buy temporary tattoos off etsy, but you can also easily make them yourself with this temporary tattoo paper.

The bride got all of the above and a couple other things. We originally were going to get everyone disco ball cups, but that was a fail on our part. We ordered them from Alibaba in January and they somehow got stuck in customs and they never arrived. They are much cheaper with much more options than if you buy them there in comparison to a regular store…can’t say I recommend trusting Alibaba though as I was just now refunded for that January order. As a back up, we bought one to have to my sister so at least she could have a fun cup! I also got her a fun straw with her name on it. I thought about doing “bride” instead of “Emma”, but she can use her name one forever.

I didn’t end up buying these just because of the volume of girls we had, but I brought these for myself and for Emma. They are my favorite eye masks! We used them the day of the wedding too. It’s hard for me to find an under eye mask that feels good and doesn’t have a bunch of chemicals. I love these and they are easy to travel with. I typically buy the 5 pack, but if you just want to try them out, they come in 1 packs too.

BACHELORETTE PARTY DECORATIONS

We had your basic disco type decorations with a little twist and a lot of customization!

  • I made the invitation on Canva. You can use templates, but also drag and drop any picture you find. I found the design I wanted for the background and went from there. Emma likes a little more color so we went with an orangey theme, not just silver and white. I made gift tags for the bags with the same background.

  • My dad made us a photo backdrop by drilling holes to make a cd wall and tying them together with fishing line.

  • He also made us a record wall using actual 45s that were my moms - you can buy similar ones here and string together with fishing line too.

  • We had one set of disco balloons that were perfect! I also bought gold balloons, rose gold balloons, silver balloons, and burnt orange balloons.

  • We had a streamer wall with silver fringe and pearlescent fringe streamers (note that it comes with a little sticky, but we taped it on as well)

  • I had some miscellaneous items like these metallic sharpies (for signing things and for writing on polaroids) and scotch packing tape as well.

  • We places these mini disco ball ornaments around the room and on a cake.

  • I had a poster made of all the girls and everyone signed it like a concert poster / it served as a memento for the bride. I modeled it after the Mamma Mia Donna and the Dynamos poster. I removed the background from everyone’s pictures on remove.bg and then pasted them in Canva to create a poster, then printed at Office Depot - I think I did the 24 x 36.

  • I bought a Kacey Musgraves Vinyl Album to display and then we all signed the inside of it. We thought about signing the actual record, but went with the inside part of the album cover.

THEME DETAILS

Themes can be hard because everyone might not participate or even understand the assignment! To try and make sure this didn’t occur, we shared the themes and intentions behind them early so people could plan. I also made a mood board with ideas for each one.

MAMMA MIA 70s RETRO DISCO EUPHORIA THEME

My outfit would have probably been a little different had we not been going rollerskating. Because of the festivities, I went with a sparkle jumpsuit. It’s under $100 and super comfortable! I purchased it in a size M and in the metallic silver color, even though the metallic silver actually looks metallic black… I paired it with this halo headpiece too and it was perfection.

My sister wore these sequin flare pants and a rhinestone bustier crop top with a long sleeve tie front crop top similar to this.

KACEY MUSGRAVES SPACE COWBOY RHINESTONE COWBOY THEME

This was a little bit harder for me to find an outfit for. Not because I didn’t know what to wear, but because I didn’t have the budget to buy what I really wanted. I truly wanted this Retrofete Robe, but couldn’t bring myself to pay that for this specific event. I ended up going with this sparkle mesh bodysuit (I took a size M) and a pair of black flares with some pointy boots. I also considered something like a fringe denim jacket crop.

My sister wore a sheer pearled crop top over a white two piece set similar to this (this is also a good option) paired with short white cowboy boots, white sunglasses and a pearlescent cowboy hat.

GAMES

As I mentioned, my sister is a big game girl, so we knew we had to knock it out of the park. Games in general are fun, but even more fun when they are custom. Here are the games we played.

  • Custom Jeopardy. Come up with your questions and then put them in Jeopardy Labs for your own game. It’s fun to see who knows the most about the couple and what (fun) facts new and old friends may not know. We displayed it on the aribnb tv by hooking up a laptop to the tv via an hdmi cable. It may not apply to you exactly, but the five categories we had questions from were:

  1. Younger Years (baby Emma)

  2. Mason (the groom)

  3. College Station (the town their university was in)

  4. The Now (Emma college and beyond)

  5. The Couple (questions pertaining to them)

The questions obviously pertain to them personally, but I wanted to share in case you needed some inspiration!

  • 20 Questions. This is basically a question / answer Game with video format. This requires a bit of planning but is totally worth it. I provided a list of questions for her fiancé and he had a month or so to get the answers back to me. I had him record himself stating the question then answering it. I spliced all the videos together using the inshot app - he actually recorded them at different times / days / locations / outfits, 5 at a time, which was actually really cute. We hooked up the video to the tv the same way we did the jeopardy game. We pressed play, let him say the question, then had Emma try to answer it prior to playing his answer. If you don’t have the means to create / show a video, even just having his questions and answers would have been fun! Typically this is played as a drinking game where you have to take a drink / shot / something when you answer the question incorrectly. I couldn’t find a good list of questions to ask, so I ended up making some of my own. Here’s the questions we asked Mason:

1) What do you love most about Emma?

2) Who is your celebrity crush?

3) Lace or satin? (Your preference in regard to lingerie)

4) What is your ideal date?

5) What is your favorite show?

6) If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

7) T or A?

8) What is your pet name for Emma?

9) What is your favorite memory of your relationship?

10) What is the best gift she ever got you?

11) What is your favorite food?

12) What city were you born in?

13) What is your biggest pet peeve?

14) What do you do that annoys her the most?

15) Where was your first kiss?

16) Who is Emma's favorite Harry Potter character?

17) When is your dating anniversary?

18) What is your favorite place you have traveled together?

19) What is your favorite song?

20) If Emma says "Mase, they are playing our song", what is it?

21) What are you most excited for regarding marriage?

  • Favorite Memories. This game is very low key, easy to make, and 100% worth it. My sister actually cried during it. I had everyone submit a favorite memory of their friendship and their favorite trait about Emma ahead of time. I pasted them into a word document, printed then cut them into strips, and put them in a bag for her to pull out one by one and read out-loud. You could always do this at the party and have everyone write them down there, but the hand writing might provide an extra clue.

  • Custom Codenames. We didn’t actually play this at the bachelorette party, but we brought it incase we had time. For one of Emma’s showers I made her a custom codenames game. I need to make a video of how I did it and what it looks like, but basically. I took pictures of the actual cards, put them in Canva, then used words that represent the bride, groom, and them as a couple - think favorite restaurant, interests and hobbies, vacation spots, etc. Like I said, my sister loves games so it was perfect! I can also create additional cards for them as life goes on.

I think that pretty much covers everything, but let me know if you have any questions. Happy to help any way I can. Happy planning! These themes were very fun and would translate great to a bridal shower or even a birthday party.
