Lesson 2: Embrace Work Chic

So, is there such a thing as "work chic"? I certainly believe so! As a 20-something who works in the fashion industry, I'm obviously not going to wear pant suits to work, but I still want to look professional.  I'm fortunate enough to be able to wear whatever I want to work (within reason). I work for the Dallas Cowboys, so if I'm not feeling it, I can literally just throw on my oversized Cowboys sweatshirt, jeans, and a ponytail and be perfectly acceptable. BUT, I only take advantage of that every so often. When I shop, I like to buy things that are versatile enough to work for many occasions.

Take this top that I'm wearing as an example.  I bought it at Urban Outfitters about a year ago. It was around $60, which I didn't really want to spend, but I asked myself these questions to see if its cuteness would be worth the money:

1) Can I wear this to work? Yes! I can pair it with a pencil skirt or slacks and it will look work professional. For casual days, I can pair it with white skinnies and even white shorts on the weekend.

2) Can it be dressed up or down well? Yep, sure can. It is a nicer looking blouse, so I'm not going to be able to make it super casual, but adjusting the shoes, accessories, and bottoms can make it look more or less formal.

3) Can I easily transition it from the office to evening? I think so. It's amazing what changing your shoes can do for an outfit; however, this top is trendy enough, I'd feel perfectly okay going out straight from the office without changing a thing.

So, I assessed the situation and realized this could be more than just a work top, so I bought it. Do you ask yourself questions when shopping? How do you assess your pieces when deciding what to buy?
